If your distribution doesn’t already have Bluetooth set up for you, you will first need to install Bluez, which contains the driver stack for Bluetooth adapters as well as utilities for the CLI administration of Bluetooth. After installing Bluez, you may need to install a Bluetooth manager.

One of the powerful features of Bluetooth Developer Studio is working with a real Bluetooth device via the Profile Tuning Suite USB dongle.

Here is what BDS looks like if you do not have a PTS Dongle installed:

Set up the PTS Dongle

You can buy a Profile Tuning Suite (PTS) USB Dongle from Bluetooth.org here.

Bluetooth Developer Studio will support only the PTS dongle and no other USB dongle

To set up your PTS dongle, refer to the document Installing_PTS_Radio_Module.pdf bundled with the installation package. You will find this document in 'C:Program Files (x86)Bluetooth SIGBluetooth Developer StudioHelp'.

Please note: you will also need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable package in order to get the PTS dongle working with Bluetooth Developer Studio. You can get that package from Microsoft here.

Search for physical Bluetooth devices

Once you have plugged in the PTS dongle and installed its driver, Bluetooth Developer Studio can search for and connect to nearby Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

Go to Workbench and tap the down-arrow to the left of ‘Virtual Server’. The list will show you any available or connected Bluetooth devices.

When your device is connected, you will see a mark next to it in the list, like so:

There are two connection states:

  1. Available, meaning the device is in Bluetooth range.

  2. Connected, meaning it is connected to your computer through the PTS dongle and ready for use in Bluetooth Developer Studio.

Once you have a server in the Connected state, you can start scripting it as you would the virtual server.

Note: if you want to switch back to using the virtual server, just select it from the drop-down list of available servers.

Saving favorite devices

Bluetooth Developer Studio attempts to balance showing you the right devices against flooding you with too many nearby devices. Hence, Bluetooth Developer Studio will ‘remember’ previously used devices you want to mark as favorites. To do this, you will need to modify the app config file, as follows:

  1. Open the bds.exe.config file (by default, installed in C:Program Files (x86)Bluetooth SIGBluetooth Developer Studio)

  2. Add a new entry inside the <BluetoothDevices?> tag. You will see there are examples in that tag, already. e.g. <add key='DE23CBC0CE1E' value='Arduino' />

Now when you go to the device popup, these devices will automatically be added.

By choosing to mark a previously discovered device as a favorite you will ensure it appears in the list of devices and will be easier to find regardless of range and the presence of other devices.
